ChatPRD: Your Ultimate Guide for Better PRDs
ChatPRD: The AI-Powered Tool for Crafting Stellar PRDs, Streamlining User Stories, and more. Learn How Top PMs Use ChatPRD to Boost Productivity, Align Stakeholders, and Ship Winning Products Faster.
Great Product Requirement Documents might be more important for your career than you realize.
From my experience, the PMs that do best in promotion committee discussions have quality work products to point to. What makes the PRD especially attractive as one of those work products is that it is one of the few work products that is held constant between different PMs.
As a result, when I was a VP of Product, I encouraged PMs on my team to always pick 2-3 big rock PRDs each quarter to really nail. And this is all for for honest reasons—not just careerist ones:
The PRD is a canvas for feedback
The PRD tends to play an outsized role in maintaining clarity across teams
The PRD enables a lot less back and forth in meetings, allowing everyone more deep work
The only problem is… who has the time?
When we PMs walk into a company, we’re handed this PRD template that the company has us use. It’s well-intentioned.
But, it can also also feel like a grip around your neck. You have to fill it out. You basically need a 90 minute work block.
The problem? Such blocks are tough to find reliably during the day. You end up getting interrupted. So, the PRD languishes—started many times, finished none. Until, one day, you just get up early or stay at the office late to get it done.

This is where ChatPRD comes in. It can take a few notes and help you go from 0 to 1 very fast.
In my testing, it takes the time you need for a PRD from 2-hours to 30-minutes:
It’s a game changer for work-life balance and burnout. You can actually draft your PRD in the work day.
That’s why I reached out to the team behind ChatPRD myself to write a quality guide.

I’ve collaborated with the team behind ChatPRD, Claire Vo and Alisa Haman, to create the ultimate end-to-end guide for using ChatPRD. Here’s what you need to know:
The story and evolution of ChatPRD
Comparing ChatPRD vs ChatGPT side-by-side
Understanding the range of ChatPRD’s use cases
The big difference between prompting ChatGPT and ChatPRD
How to optimize your ChatPRD setup for success
How to prompt ChatPRD well
Most common mistakes
1. ChatPRD: The story and evolution
Claire Vo is a 3-time CPO at Optimizely, Color, and, now, LaunchDarkly. And Alisa was a GPM at Adobe. What made them go in on ChatPRD?
Hear it in their own words:
We’ll be having an AMA in the Product Growth Slack (paid subscribers only) with Alisa Haman on Wednesday 6/12 at 9AM EST/ 3PM CEST/ 6:30PM IST.
2. ChatPRD vs ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs LLama-3:
Let’s compare ChatPRD to its competitors when it comes to drafting a PRD:
As you can see, the ChatPRD prompt and ChatGPT mega-prompt clearly come out ahead. And the benefits of the ChatPRD prompt?
It was simple and iterative. It asks the questions you need instead of you having to include it all.
The writing is really usable. You can actually share this with your team without them saying, “this is AI junk.”
ChatPRD has my (or your) template built in. You can actually instruct ChatPRD to use Aakash’s template (or Lenny’s or Claire’s), or your own.
The result of these benefits is: the ChatPRD prompt really helps you reduce the time spent on your PRD draft. You can spend more time on the important parts of the PRD and less on the writing.
So, now that it’s clear that ChatPRD is really an upgrade to your other LLM paid subscriptions (and one you can probably expense), let’s get into using ChatPRD well.
